Driving Wars combines state of the art robotics, radio control technology and high speed video links with driver skill to create the ultimate driving competition as two teams of petrol heads get the unique opportunity to operate full-size, real cars via remote control from the comfort of an arcade style simulator.

Outside the cars they control face an extreme environment of very real obstacles and pursuit vehicles, all looking a lot like rejects from a scene in Mad Max, including trying to avoid being squashed by an angry looking 12 tonne truck. The teams navigate their cars through these dangerous driving face-offs and Hollywood style stunts, aiming to last the longest and steer their vehicle to safety.

In the first episode team Williams, dubbed the ‘Rally Dragons’ takes on a trio of car dealers in TVs most extreme motoring game show. To decide who has automotive bragging rights, the teams must survive The Road from Hell, jump a 100 foot wall of scrap cars and attempt to escape from the Bear Pit before facing the final challenge, the Wrecking Yard.

The groundbreaking new series is the first to combine the very latest in remote control technology, robotics and high speed video links and is presented by radio DJ and sports enthusiast Colin Murray, and his co-host Abi Griffiths and is gaining large viewing audiences already.

The rivals control full-size, real cars in real challenges form a converted Jaguar XJ6 that doesn't move an inch allowing them to take part in some pretty dangerous challenges without the risk of a broken back. The steering system, accelerator and brakes of the Jaguar are hooked up to sensors that relay every move made by the contestants to a real car out on the track, via radio control.

That car is fitted with high tech receivers that relay every turn of the wheel or foot on the pedal in the Jaguar to the radio control car by means of compressed air operated robotics. Using TV mini HD cameras inside the cars, the signal is transmitted via high-speed video link to the teams in the base station as they race against the clock.

Commenting on the experience, Sara states, “It was really exciting to be part of the show, although the driving experience is very different from the rally cars as you are relying on visuals alone, rather than the physical feedback and noise you get in the rally car, plus I’m not used to driving with Shon and my dad in car shouting instructions rather than my usual navigator Patrick. It was still very satisfying to win all three challenges, but I wouldn’t swap remote control for the real thing any time soon.”

You can see the show on Dave and Sara’s episode is also on YouTube if you want to relive the thrills and spills on your PC.
